David Hendrick, CKD

David has worked in the family firm since high school, and continued while he earned a degree in business from VCU. He had a true apprenticeship under his father’s guidance, working first as a carpenter’s helper, then as an installer. Training from suppliers broadened the design skills he learned on the job. He has been a Certified Kitchen Designer for twenty years, and has continued to take classes in drafting and design, to make sure his clients get the best the market has to offer. He particularly likes clean, crisp modern style, and cites an all-white kitchen with high-gloss finishes and lots of angles as his favorite project so far. “My dad was my mentor,” he says. “He taught me to listen to the client, do what you say you’re going to do, and take care of the client after the sale.”

Richard Hendrick, CKD

Richard has spent his whole career in the family business, working first as a carpenter’s helper, where he learned the construction side of business. He earned a business degree from JMU, learned on the job and in a variety of continuing education programs, and has been a Certified Kitchen Designer for twenty years. His father was his mentor, and instilled in Richard the dedicated, client-focused, collaborative approach that defines the company. The firm retains its sense of family, and one of Richard’s greatest pleasures as company president is working for multiple members of the same client families. He recently completed a project for the third generation of one of their clients. “We have a lot of long-term employees,” says this award-winning designer. “All of us work together on the same goal of taking care of our clients.”

Marie “Mint” Schlief, CKD, CBD

Mint has been with the company for thirty-five years, and has been a Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer for fifteen. Starting as a draftsman, she moved into sales and design in l982, and her work has won awards and been published in national magazines and textbooks. Her higher education came from West Virginia University and Weshampton College. Regardless of the style of her projects, she is passionate about details. She particularly loves the challenge of a very large or a very tiny space. And like everyone who came under the tutelage of Arthur Hendrick, her guiding principle is service to the clients.

Barbara Facetti

Barbara came to Custom Kitchens, Inc. twenty-five years ago with a degree in graphic art from the Art Institute of Pittsburg, and began as the company’s draftsperson. Her on-the-job training gave her not only expertise in design, but also a deep understanding of the client-oriented ethic that drives the company. A published designer, she approaches every project with an artist’s eye for line, proportion, and color. Her greatest strength is her ability to incorporate new influences and ideas into her long experience in every style of kitchen and bath design.

Douglas B. Leake, CKD

Doug is a locally and nationally published, award-winning designer who is trained in business and education as well as design. Attracted by the close relationships of this family firm, he joined Custom Kitchens, Inc. in 1992, and became an NKBA Certified Kitchen Designer a year later. He comes from a long line of building contractors, and was mentored by his uncle, gaining a deep knowledge of the intricacies of construction and installation. He holds advanced degrees in business and in education from VA Tech, and has served as state president and national chapter representative of the NKBA. All styles of kitchen and bath design intrigue him equally, and he has enjoyed every project he has worked on. Doug has a thorough understanding of the whole process, and of the products he sells, and prides himself on the focused and timely completion of every job.
