The Challenge
In the age of downsizing, these empty-nesters are taking the traditional route and keeping the home their three children grew up in as their family hub. As their children get married and have children, they need a space big enough for the whole family, not only in terms of their home, but also their kitchen. Their kitchen was interrupted by a large pantry and lacking in storage. It also needed a refresh -- something to brighten the space and bring it up to date.
The Solution
Above the door leading to the formal dining room, a short wall cabinet connects the cabinetry on either side of the door. It also is reminiscent of traditional bespoke English kitchens, where every inch (or centimeter!) of the kitchen is put to use. The backsplash is carried up to the ceiling, which not only unites the room and makes the large space feel cohesive, but also adds a layer of intricate detail.
The contrasting inset cherry island with its deep burgundy stain adds a level of warmth that balances the white cabinets along the perimeter, while the hardware on the island comes from a local Richmond craftswoman. The whole kitchen combines timeless design elements with a modern twist, fitting perfectly in Richmond.
