The Challenge
After a large rainstorm overwhelmed the original drain in this 1851 home in Church Hill, 5” of rainwater flooded into the basement of this historic home. After repairing the damage done in the basement, this husband and wife team decided to remodel their kitchen, master bath, and back deck, as well as a few projects along the way. They want their charming home in Church Hill to be their forever home, and thanks to the house’s tumultuous history with squatters and shoddy renovations work before they moved in, it needed a little love and elbow grease to get it in tip-top shape.
The Solution
Kitchen
In the kitchen, a new L-shape layout helped open the space, which was achieved by removing a doorway and adding a boxed bay window, to maintain the natural light. This added storage and countertop space, which was much needed in this former galley kitchen. Also in the kitchen, custom made floor to ceiling shelving units were built in our shop to display the family’s collection of decorative plates and beloved trinkets. A hammered copper sink paired with brick-like tile and custom molding details from Caravati’s give the space an open Tuscan feeling.
Master Bath
By removing a linen closet on the second floor, the master bath was able to expand. A new freestanding tub with a luxurious walk in shower across it makes for the perfect nightly escape. While space is still limited in this master bath, a new hammered iron sink with his-and-hers faucets allow for this husband and wife to feel like they have their own space while also sharing- which really, isn’t that what marriage is all about?!
Basement
After completing the necessary repairs for the basement, a new space took form. Custom bookshelf built-ins were built in our shop, and a new shiplap focal point was added where a former defunct fireplace used to sit. A sliding bookcase functions as a door to the English basement, with a brand new kitchenette, larger bathroom, and again, more bespoke built-ins.
First Floor
On the first floor, some mild touch ups were made to the banister so that it no longer jutted into the walkway, as well as re-tiling the fireplace surrounds and adding new doors to the built-ins. It was a pleasure to turn the needs and desires of this couple into a reality. Now, this charming Church Hill home is not only functional, but also comfortable and stylish.
