The Challenge

This uniquely shaped kitchen, composed of a series of 135° angled walls, was disjointed from the rest of this open concept living space. Their work triangle runs parallel to a wall of built in storage that they were hoping to keep, which limited them in layout changes. Dark stained wood cabinetry made the space feel claustrophobic, and was the complete opposite of the family room this kitchen spills into. They wanted a fresh color palette that would carry the light from the great room into the heart of their home. These excited grandparents were looking for a space where they could prepare meals for their family without being cut off from the action.

The Solution

A soft and fresh gray for the cabinets maintains the airy feeling coming from the den directly off the kitchen and contrasts with the house crown and the wall of pantry cabinets opposite the kitchen. Gold hardware contrasts with the stainless steel appliances, and adds warmth. The quartz countertops have grey veining that call to the cabinetry and the house crown, while the scalloped backsplash is a unique twist on the white tile backsplash idea.

Centering the oven on the straight wall draws your eye toward the focal point the designer created in the open shelving above the range. Plenty of prep space and landing zones on the surrounding perimeter cabinetry as well as the islands create seamless flow between the range, fridge, and sink. The extended top behind the sink creates a perfect breakfast space, and also removes the need for a large island with seating. The island not only has two working sides, but also makes use of the dead space between the sink and refrigerator wall.

A cabinet with a wine rack and hidden storage was custom-built in our shop, perfect for the mail and other odds and ends. The existing cabinets were refinished and closely examined so that we could custom build a door that matched exactly! In the end, it matched so seamlessly that you wouldn’t know the new cabinet is significantly younger than the old!
