The Challenge
This couple of retirees traded their stately Monument Avenue home for a sleek condo a few blocks away in Stuart Circle. They wanted their kitchen to embody the sleek and simple design that was so opposite of their former home, a look they had come to admire through their many travels abroad. Everything in their space was being carefully built and curated with the highest attention to detail, and they were lucky to be paired with a designer who had that same eye. However, while their spacious condo is the perfect place to host their children and grandchildren, the wide open room proved to be a layout challenge, with many different rooms all being pushed into one space. Low ceilings and awkwardly angled walls required careful planning, and detailed craftsmanship from our installers.
The Solution
Unique lyptus cabinetry unifies the kitchen and living room located just off the kitchen. A simple L-shape kitchen keeps the space open and easy to walk through, while the seamless finish of the cabinets to the ceiling makes the space feel taller and doesn’t distract with dated moulding. Paneled appliances ensure that the space is cohesive and mostly uninterrupted, and the low profile Zephyr hood and Wolf cooktop offer the perfect complement. The cabinet doors have all been bookended, meaning the grain is mirrored in adjoining butt doors. The attention to detail in the bookending truly showed the homeowner that their designer, Doug, was committed to giving them the kitchen of their dreams.
As for combining multiple living spaces, the built in TV surround not only offers ample storage (either for kitchen or entertainment!) but carries the feel of the kitchen along the main wall. Instead of having a beautiful kitchen and then a separate entertainment center, these clients were able to maximize their space and storage. The quartz countertops carry up the wall into a high splash adds a simple yet eye-catching feature, and the low profile matte black hardware provides a nice accent without stealing attention from the focal point, the lyptus cabinets. All of these elements combine to showcase simple, elegant, design and prove that you don’t need bright flashy pops of color to catch someone’s eye.
