The Challenge

After moving into this 1940’s Bungalow with much of its original features, this family of four knew that this dated kitchen wouldn’t work for their active lifestyle. With little storage, inefficient appliances, and a scattered layout, this kitchen was in major need of a total rehaul, without sacrificing the charm and quirks that make this home an authentic Richmond bungalow.

The Solution

Cantilevering the refrigerator corner into an existing laundry/pantry area that was three steps lower than the kitchen added 25 sq ft to the space, which definitely covered the need for more storage! White shaker cabinets paired with a blue-green hexagonal tile brightened the space while maintaining the whimsy found in the rest of this cozy home.

In the original kitchen, a fun mid-century modern mirror backsplash ran behind the cabinets. As maintaining the charm of their home was a goal for this couple, they chose to pair their bar with a mirror backsplash. This special space would not have existed if it weren’t for moving the fridge, and in doing so, the homeowners discovered their favorite part of the kitchen. This coffee bar/actual bar is the perfect spot for any time of day, and the homeowners find themselves using it constantly, whether it be to make school lunches in the morning or enjoy a cocktail during happy hour.
